Nothing is more exciting than the first appointment to shop for your wedding dress. Wether you have been dreaming about it your entire life, or are still unsure of what you’re looking for, the first shopping trip can be a little overwhelming. This is different than any shopping you have done before, and you may be feeling a little bit of pressure from the magnitude of the decision. Regardless of where you are going or what you are looking for, having a little pre-knowledge will help to ensure a fabulous experience! Here are some of my best tips to help you prep for your first wedding dress appointment!
Buy the right undergarments
This is often overlooked yet so crucial to your level of comfort during the appointment. Nothing can derail a white wedding dress shopping trip quicker than bright pink undies! Equally important is your bra choice. If you do not already, now is the time to invest in a well-fitted, nude strapless bra. Overall, you want to be relaxed in front of the sales associate helping you in and out of the gowns, so keep that in mind when making your selection. This one by Spanx is truly life changing!
Pamper yourself
Especially at the first appointment, it is so incredibly important to be feeling your absolute best both inside and out! Spend a little time the week before with a mani/pedi, and consider a blowout and light makeup the morning-of. You definitely want to look and feel your absolute best as you try on the most expensive clothing of your entire life! Lastly, and maybe it goes without saying, but be sure to shave your legs 😉
Do your homework
This is unlike any shopping experience you have ever had, and you want to be fully prepared! Research the designers carried at the store you are visiting and make sure it aligns with the style and budget you have set. I recommend selecting a store with a wide variety of options as well as a conservative price point. Believe me, nothing is worse than finding out you are unable to afford anything they have to offer on your first trip. Be sure to bring a few inspiration photos, and if you have your eye on a specific wedding dress you will definitely want to call ahead and make sure they have a sample on site!
Consider your entourage
If you have seen ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ more than once, I will spare you of the lecture on how dangerous it is to include a large number of guests at your first bridal appointment. Not only can it be incredible difficult to manage conflicting opinions and tastes, but this can quickly diminish your excitement for the experience. I have encouraged a few of my clients to plan a secret first shopping trip where they can navigate their feelings without any pressure. It is always a good idea to help your friends and family prepare by sharing your taste and style preferences with them ahead of time, that way they don’t risk false expectations.
No saying “yes” to the dress
I strongly encourage my clients to avoid saying “yes” in the same appointment when the tried the dress on for the first time. Unless you went into the appointment looking for a specific wedding dress you had your eye on for years or there’s a mind-blowing 90% off sale expiring that day, only good will come from taking a night to sleep on it. Even if you find yourself surrounded by happy tears and are positive you have found the wedding dress of your dreams, say “yes” and then ask your consultant if you can return later to pay. At the end of the day, your comfort and certainty are the only things that matter!
Best of luck and happy shopping!
